Top 5 Ways to Stay Organized During Your Move |
Staying organized during a move is crucial to a smooth move. Staying organized will help make your day a little less stressful and your first night in your new home much more enjoyable.
- Pack Systematically . Pack room by room leaving only the essentials unpacked until the last minute. Pick one room in your house (which you can live without) and stack all of your packed boxes in that room. This leaves you feeling less like you are living in a warehouse and more like you are living in your home. An add on tip for this is to keep your packing supplies in this room as well. A stack of flat boxes, paper, and markers all located in one place helps you know where you are in the packing process. When you return your packed box, pick up an empty one!
- Label Boxes By Room . Regardless of the room a specific box comes from in your home, you want to be sure your boxes end up in the correct room in your new home. A very helpful tip for this is using large colored pieces of paper. You can assign each room a color by putting a piece of paper over each doorway to correspond with the boxes which will go in it. This makes organizing much easier. Just be sure to secure the paper on the box with tape on each side.
- Make A Floor Plan . Making a floor plan of your new house is helpful to you as well as the movers. This gives you time to figure out just where everything is going to go in your new home, and to be sure that everything is going to fit well in the new area. Here are some links to websites which can help you with this here and here
- Keep Paperwork In A Central Location – When you are moving it is hard to keep track of your head, let alone paperwork. I can.t tell you the number of times people have told me they packed their paperwork for their move. Keep your information for your realtor, new home, old home, and mover all in one place. This will keep you from packing your important documents as well as help you stay organized.
- “Open First” Box . This may be a repeat tip but it is an important one. Having an “open first” box keeps you organized on moving day. It makes it possible for you to find everything you may need. To find out what you should put in your .open first. box, click on our previous blog post.
